  • The 2017 Emmy Award nominations were announced on Thursday, featuring a surprising mix of familiar names, first-time nominees and shocking snubs. With perennial favorite Game of Thrones out of the running (because its sixth-season premiere this weekend comes after the eligibility cutoff date), HBO’s new sci-fi-Western Westworldtied for the most nominations with 22 alongside NBC’s sketch-comedy stalwart Saturday Night Live, which enjoyed a banner year thanks to its lampooning of the 2016 presidential election. In addition to Outstanding Drama Series, Westworld received acting nods for Anthony Hopkins, Evan Rachel Wood and Jeffrey Wright. Meanwhile, SNLscooped up acting nods for cast members Kate McKinnon, Vanessa Bayer and Leslie Jones, “supporting actor” and frequent guest star Alec Baldwin and host Melissa McCarthy. Among the newcomers, Netflix’s ’80s sci-fi hit Stranger Things received nods for Drama Series, as well as for cast members Millie Bobby Brown and David Harbour. Stranger Things tied with another newcomer, FX’s new limited series Feud: Bette and Joan, for the second-most nominations with 18, while Veep was in third place with 17 nods. Among the snubs, Mr. Robot’s Rami Malek wasn’t nominated for Lead Actor in a Drama despite winning that category last year. Today’s announcements were co-hosted by Shemar Moore, star of the upcoming drama S.W.A.T., and Veeps Anna Chlumsky–who learned she’d received her fifth nod for Supporting Actress in a Comedy when Moore opened a surprise envelope with her name inside. This year’s Emmy Awards will take place on September 17 at 8 p.m. ET and will air live on CBS with host Stephen Colbert.
